Ghana

Cause

It is estimated that over half of the world’s roughly 6 billion people live in rural communities that are often beyond the reach of communication networks and services. These very communities, however, are the ones in which access to information and technology can play a profound role in helping its members lift themselves out of poverty. Ghana is no exception, leaving many of its most needy citizens isolated from the rest of the world and trapped in the cycle of poverty. For youth suffering from the disabilities of poverty and physical and developmental challenges, there is little chance of improving their lives unless they have access to technology and the skills to effectively utilize it.

Mission

Dreams for Kids is teaming with local governmental and non-governmental organizations in Ghana to build Community Information and Technology Centers (CITC’s) for these disenfranchised youth. The CITC’s will provide its participants with intensive hands-on computer training, career counseling, and job opportunities. In addition, the CITC’s will aim to promote the overall development of all children with disabilities. The development of the first CITC will target 500 children and young adults from 15 to 30 years old. The following initiatives will be our focus:

  1. Information and Technology: The CITC will provide training, including data entry, word processing, graphic design, office management, and use of the Internet.
  2. Employment Training: In addition to information and technology skills, participants can sign up to learn other marketable skills, including tailoring, dress making, sales, and more.
  3. Employment Opportunities: The CITC will work in collaboration with local governmental organizations in securing employment opportunities for the participants. Once completing the program, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion recognized by Ghana’s Ministry of Education, Youth, and Employment, enabling them to receive essential bank loans, apply for jobs, and advance in today’s digital economy.
  4. Advocate for Those with Disabilities: CITC will protect, promote, and spread public awareness about the rights of those with disabilities. Through the CITC, families and individuals will have access to information on disabilities, available programs, and necessary care. The CITC will also assist in providing educational sponsorship & school support, home based care, and referral services for participating individuals.

Opportunity

There is a significant opportunity to make a difference in the lives of Ghana youth who live with disabilities. We will empower these young people with the skills and training they need to succeed and break the cycle of poverty.

Plan of Action

Dreams for Kids- Ghana will be the principal organization leading the project and will work in collaboration with other local and international NGOs. Odoom Domson, the Country Director for DFK-Ghana, will lead the project.

Committee members shall be formed by March 2009 to determine the scope and budget for the project. Operational and developmental plans will be ready by April 2009.

Since the project will be the first of its kind in Ghana, documentation is critical. All phases of development will be carefully documented, so the model may be replicated in other communities in Ghana and eventually throughout Africa, and the world.

Financing

Funding will be from contributions from individuals, businesses, corporate bodies, and student groups in the US and Ghana.

We appreciate your donation and welcome your partnership in this project. Please contact us to get involved.
