Mental Illness

Everyday children face difficulties because of mental illness. Mental illnesses cover a wide range and can include diagnoses of major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Each of these conditions can severely affect the everyday lives of the individual, but with help they can be overcome. There is a large amount of help out there for children, parents, friends, siblings of those who are dealing with mental illness.

National Alliance on Mental Illness- Resources for adults suffering from or wanting to learn more about major depressive disorders.  This site not only lists descriptions of symptoms and causes of the disease, but also lists recommended treatments.

Psychology Info – Information on Depression- Resource to learn more about major depressive disorder and also different types of depression.  This site is not only helpful for adults but also has sections that have more information for teens, women, and senior citizens.

National Institute for Mental Health – This is a helpful resource for Bipolar Diseases.  It lists risks, symptoms, and treatments for those suffering from bipolar disorder.  There are also sections for research funding, recent news on the disease, and support for caregivers.

Schizophrenia- This site is useful for both those suffering from schizophrenia and medical professionals, caregivers, and for children whose parents have been diagnosed with the disease.  There is some general information on symptoms and treatments, but there is also more detailed information such as pictures of the brain, support groups, and success stories.

Anxiety- Anxiety disorders are becoming more common so this website helps those suffering feel at ease by listing resources to explain the disease and its links to other common mental disorders such as depression and alcoholism.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder- This site lists symptoms, risks, as well as available treatment and coping methods from those suffering from this disorder.  It is a way to learn more to prevent and assess the disease.  The site also has a way for sufferers and loved ones to post their stories and gain extra support.
