Uganda Beads

For most residents of war torn Uganda, the only paid work is breaking stones in a nearby quarry for 80 cents a day. In 2004, a women was discovered by Americans, Torkin Wakefield and Devin Hibberd, and her daughter Ginny Jordan sitting in front of her mud hut rolling strips of old paper into beads. The woman, Millie Grace Akena, told them that she and other women in the slum made necklaces out of the beads, but had no place to sell them. The Americans brought them home to sell and an industry was born. Today women who create the beads earn, on average, more than $1,200 a year, more than many schoolteachers make in Uganda.

Dreams for Kids Uganda Programs Director Richard Okneka has recruited women from his home country of Northern Uganda to make these beads to support our Uganda projects, including building the Mama Patricia School. Thank you for supporting the women of Uganda in their effort to help bring education for their children and hope for the future.
