Dreams for Kids captures the true embodiment of humanity. This book inspires people to seek out the extraordinary in everyone they meet…to create a world, one community at a time, that embraces all races, economic classes, cultures, and abilities realizing we are nothing without each other and that we all have value… Dreams for Kids is a vision of beauty, conviction, and discipline…a way of life…This book brings honor, and character and chivalry back to a culture in desperate need of purpose and meaning.

This book is a must read! I loved it so much that I read it over and over. The many inspirational quotes and real life stories makes the reader want to improve the world. It is a story of compassion and shows the power that each individual possesses. This book really can change lives! It makes you think! It makes you appreciate things! Most importantly, it helps us remember that we are all equal and need to help others! When I first picked up the book, I could not put it down! Sensational!

Cortez Alexander

From the Westside of Chicago to the World

Cortez was born 1lb 7 oz, in poverty and neglect. He found Dreams for Kids online. In his words, he was “fighting his way out of high school.” After attending one of our youth leadership We Are The Change conferences the fight was over. Cortez was transformed by the possibilities of what his life could be and how he could change the world. After being elected vice president of his class, studying hard and working in the community, Cortez was awarded a scholarship to DePaul University. He graduated with honors and was chosen by the State Department to be one of 50 U.S students to study overseas to help increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries to promote friendly, and peaceful relations. He is an International Youth Ambassador with World Chicago and is contributing to our new social entrepreneurship curriculum.

Cortez recently was awarded a scholarship to Graduate School of International Policy and Management to study for a Master of Arts in International Education Management and Public Administration (IEM/MPA) at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.

Cortez is what’s possible. If you are a student, you too can achieve your dreams and make an impact.

Tom Tuohy

Replacing Charity with Opportunity

Tom Tuohy lived this story. He was one of these kids. Abandoned by his father at eight years old, his single parent mother of four struggled greatly. Tom was working three jobs and drifting in high school. It was the intervention of one teacher, life changing mentors and strong role models that made all the difference.

Working in the community since he was nineteen years old and founding Dreams for Kids when he graduated law school, Tom was inspired by his education in social innovation at Stanford Business School and Kellogg at Northwestern. Having learned that charity does not work, Tom is convinced that social entrepreneurship is the way to solve our most pressing and threatening social issues.

Jesse White

From the Soul Coast to the Gold Coast

Jesse White was a Chicago Public School teacher who played for the Chicago Cubs. One day a parent asked him to host a gymnastics show so that her son could stay off the dangerous streets of Cabrini Green. After the show, Jesse could not let the impact end and he founded the now world famous Jesse White Tumbling Team. For the last 56 years, his tumbling team has performed across the U.S and in countries around the world and includes a tutoring and scholars program. Over 14,000 youths have followed the strict rules of Mr. White, maintained good grades, stayed away from gangs, drugs and alcohol while graduating to a better life.

Jesse White is now the longest serving Secretary of State in Illinois history. As he reminds us all, he is not a politician, he is a public servant. When he was 19 years old, Dreams for Kids founder Tom Tuohy met Jesse White and he became his lifelong mentor, influencing the mission of Dreams for Kids.
