Exploring Equality @ Jane Addams Hull-House

Why?

Students are studying the Hero’s Journey during their final Unit, and are being asked to analyze examples of heroes who passed through the stages of the journey, both fictional and real. While we have focused on fiction throughout the term, students will have an opportunity to study a real, local hero by actually exploring Jane Addams’ home/workplace.

How?

Students will be led on a guided tour of the museum by a staff person, and will search for evidence of heroism as they learn about Jane Addams, early Chicago social reform, and the history and ongoing service programs of Hull House.

What?

Using Jane Addams’ life and work as a real-life example of “the hero”, students will apply their knowledge of this literary archetype and the “hero’s journey, and have a meaningful transition into their AP3.
