Chicago History Through Vivian Maier @ Chicago History Museum

Why?

We are studying photojournalism in our first unit, and have learned about the discovery, several years ago, of Vivian Maier’s Chicago street photography. We are going to visit the Vivian Maier’s Chicago exhibit at the museum, as well as discover a Chicago railroad photographer’s work.

How?

Students will complete an FE Reflection Guide; they will practice and apply content/skills (the 5 w’s of journalism, photo composition, descriptive language).

What?

Prior to our visit, we learned about Vivian Maier and her artistic champion, John Maloof, who also co-created a documentary about the photographer. We read a Mother Jones article by Alex Kotlowitz on Maier and her work, and will share our reactions to the exhibit when we return to campus.
